This weekend we once again honor those who sacrificed much so that this nation can be free and remain strong... From Arlington National Cemetery to those areas across this great nation... that are marked by those white headstones...which memorialize the final resting place of so many...who left loved ones behind...and whose lives were tragically cut short... these markers are not only here in the United States...but in Normandy and above the oceans floor in the Pacific where so many were were buried with the USS Arizona...
This 34 year old Marine Major's headstone depicted above is like all others that populate the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery...you can see in the photo, his flag draped casket being carried by his classmates from the United States Naval Academy...barely visible in this photo is a wife and young child....this Marine was named by his fellow warriors "The Lion of Fallujah' for his heroics in Operation Iraqi Freedom...
The heroics of most are noted mainly by their fellow warriors...many men and women have lost their lives...and limbs...in these noble efforts...our brothers and sisters...our uncles and aunts...and yes, some Moms and Dads....and for Major Zembiec his infant daughter who will only know of her Dad through photos and the love of his loving wife and all in the Corps that admired him as a true American hero...
Before the children of Haverhill leave for this long weekend....take some time to explain the real meaning behind Memorial Day...so that as individuals we all pause, reflect, and say thank you...to those whose legacy has allowed us to enjoy our freedoms...
May they rest in peace....and may God bless their families for the sacrifices of those so loved...
